Why is the child in hands of the beggar always sleeping?

Why is the child sleeping in the hands of beggars? Have you ever wondered…

This is an article I came across months ago. We are not sure of the author, however, we’ve checked the authenticity of this with our followers in Bangkok and Cambodia. Surprisingly, this seems to be true, and their request, is only to offer beggars food and water – not money. Any help you can give in terms of their needs are just fine. But make sure you do not hand over big bills, that will keep the begging industry going. You should be wise enough to know whom to help and how to help. Make your decision based on the situation and knowing it well enough.
.
“Near the metro station, sits a woman of uncertain age. Her hair is confused and dirty, her head bowed in grief.

The woman sits on the dirty floor and next to her lies a bag. Into that bag, people throw money. In the woman’s hands, asleep, is a two year old baby. He is in a dirty hat and dirty clothes

“Madonna with baby” – numerous passers-by will donate money. The people of our kind – we always feel sorry for those less fortunate. We are ready to give unfortunate people our last shirt, the last penny out of our pocket and never think another issue. Helping, seems like a “Good job done.”

I walked past the beggar for a month. I did not give any money, as I knew that this is a gang-operated scam, and that money collected by the beggar, will be given to whoever controls beggars in the area. Those people own numerous luxury properties and cars. The beggar also gets something, of course, “A bottle of vodka in the evening and a döner kebab.” A month later, walking past the beggar, a shock suddenly hit me….
I’m standing at a busy crossing, staring at the baby. He is dressed, as always, in a dirty track suit. I realized that it seemed “wrong”, finding a child in a dirty underground station from morning to evening. The baby was always asleep. He never sobbed or screamed, he always slept, burying his face in the knee of a woman who was his MUM.

Do any of you, dear readers, have children? Remember how often they slept at the age of 1, 2 or 3 years old? An hour, two, maximum three (and never consecutive). An afternoon nap, and there was always movement. For the whole month, every day I walked to the underground station, I never saw the child awake! I looked at the tiny little man, with his face buried in the knee of his mother, then at the beggar, and my suspicion was gradually formed. “Why does he sleep all the time?” I asked, staring at the baby.

The beggar pretended not to hear me. She lowered her eyes and hid her face in the collar of her shabby jacket. I repeated the question. The woman again looked up. She looked somewhere behind my back, tired with utter irritation. Her look was similar to the creatures from a different planet.

“F *** off,” her lips murmured.

“Why is he asleep?!” I almost cried.

Behind me, someone put their hand on my shoulder. I looked back. An old man was looking at me disapprovingly:

“What do you want from her? Can’t you see how hard she’s got it in her life? Eh?”

He took some coins from his pocket and threw them in the beggar’s bag.

The beggar made a cross by waving her hand, portraying the face of humility and universal grief. The guy removed his hand from my shoulder and strolled out of the underground station. I bet, at home, he will tell how he defended poor, distraught woman from a soulless man in a tube station.

Next day, I called a friend. He was a funny man with eyes like olives. His nationality – Romanian. He only managed to complete three and a half years of education. His lack of education did not prevent him from moving around the City streets in expensive foreign cars and live in a “small” house with a countless number of windows and balconies. From my friend, I managed to find out that the beggar is part of a business. Despite the genuine appearance, it is clearly organized. It is supervised by organized crime rings. The children used are “rented” from families of alcoholics, or simply stolen.

I needed to get the answer to my question – Why is the baby always sleeping? And I received it. My friend explained it to me, casually and with a calm voice that twisted me in shock, just like he was talking about weather report: “They are on heroin, or vodka.”

I was dumbfounded. “Who is on heroin or vodka?!”

He answered, “The Child, so he doesn’t scream. The women will be sitting whole day with him, imagine how he might get bored?

In order to make the baby slept the whole day, it pumped up with vodka or drugs. Of course, children’s bodies are not able to cope with such a shock. And children often die. The most terrible thing – sometimes children die during the “working day”. And imaginary mother must hold another dead child on her hands until the evening. These are the rules. And the by passers-by will throw some money in the bag, and believe that they are moral. Helping the mother alone.”

The next day, I was walking near the same underground station. I built up journalistic confidence and was ready for a serious conversation. But the conversation didn’t work out. Instead, it turned out the following way … the woman was sitting on the floor and in her hands she was holding a different child. I asked her a question about the documents of the child, and, most importantly, where was the child from yesterday. She simply ignored me. My questions were not ignored by passers-by though. I was told that I was out of my mind, questioning a poor beggar with a child. Eventually, I was escorted out of the station in disgrace. The one thing that remained was to call the police. When the police arrived, the beggar with the baby had disappeared. I stood with a full sense of “trying to fight windmills.”

When you see in the subway, or on the street, women with children, begging, think before your hand them your money. Think about it, that if it wasn’t for your hundreds of thousands of handouts, the business like this would have died. The business would die and not the children, pumped full of vodka or drugs. Do not look at the sleeping child with affection… See horror… Since you are reading this article, you know now why the child is sleeping in beggars hands.

P.S.
If you copy this article on your wall or just click “Share”, your friends will read it too.
And when you decide again to open your wallet to throw a coin to a beggar with a sleeping child,
remember that this charity could cost another child’s life.”

“This is an article I came across months ago. We are not sure of the author, however, we’ve checked the authenticity of this with our followers in Bangkok and Cambodia. Surprisingly, this seems to be true.”

No serious journalist would ever publish anything on that vague ground, but still you do. This is such a bullshit article.

  • Errol Jay Bastareche

This is an informative article, and it did its’ job. Don’t focus on your thoughts alone, I’ve seen this firsthand. There are even people who drop them by at their locations early morning, especially when people are not around. Those people who drop them by also picks them up before 6 PM. I observed this at my school. They are always at places where people pass.
This article is not non-sense, as what you described. There are people(including you) who have no idea that this scheme of using the poor is a gang-operated scam

  • Djupast

Sure, there might be, that is not the issue here. Some people do this and som people do that. But that does not mean you can write articles about specific persons and write that they are feeding their kids vodka without having any sort of sources.

  • sndegwa28

You sound so insensitive as if you’re one of these gangs. Did you even read the story. Did it occur to you that a CHILD is fed heroin! A sensitization post is too dramatic to save a poor baby’s life?

  • Djupast

Please don’t accuse me of being in one of these horrible gangs and read what I have to say instead.
It is wrong to accuse this woman of feeding her child heroin or vodka without having ANY sources that this is the case.

  • Chotara

Slamdog Millionaire movie….beggers scaming people….seems legit to me.

  • gg

first of all it did not say that the woman was the mother of the child, it say’s the beggar is probably not related to the child at all as these children are often kidnapped or rented from poor families by bribery. and the fact that the same woman was actually holding a different child the following day would seem legit enough to doubt. and he was just using his own experience to site as an example for others.

  • burned

what Djupast is trying to imply is that there was no hard evidence, i get his point, i mean look, the author is even unknown, so meaning we cant be 100% sure if this article is telliing the truth or not.

  • loversfhem

Yes, this is true i believe what the author wrote all about the beggar in that country.Cause i totally saw this in my two eye. THIS IS NOT NONSENSE BESIDE THIS IS TOTALY FACTS AND TRUE.and i agree w
    hat the author wrote.

  • Corina Cimbala

The info in the article is real, but i don’t think the action takes place in Asia. I remember reading the exact same thing written by a Romanian, a few years back, on a blog or newspaper website.

  • Jeri

I agree since its also happening here in our country (Philippines). There are big syndicates who kidnap children and threat to harm and kill their families if they escape. Giving them money will not help them instead your compromising them that being lazy is OK!

  • triple

so you need proof? did it not occur to you that maybe the author hid his information for protection? guys you see he posted this and maybe the gangs can read them and then search for him? WHY would you care more of the authenticity of the article rather than the real issue itself

  • Pebles

Yes, I saw that the baby is always sleeping. Now I know, next time i will observe the beggar and the baby..There are plenty here in the street of CEBU and MANILA..

  • Asima Nazneen

Please don’t use bad language. And I wanted to say the same thing that the story says she is not the mother.

  • Jacqueline

I am really not surprised that this happens. I’ve travelled to parts of South America and the back roads of Asia – in SA, had little kids surround me at 11pm on a busy street while I could tell their ‘managers’ were looking on some metres away. It would then make sense that these ‘businesses’ hire woman and babies, as passerby usually pay more when they see a woman with child. I’ve also wondered why the baby always slept. Sad.

  • Nikki Nichole LaWong

She took the word of a person who isn’t a doctor, didn’t examine the child or run toxicology. Everyone is just taking this person’s word. Typical!!

  • Sammi British

Your an idiot.. And probably the leader of this gang. Think about the child
I clearly see that this article is upsetting you.

  • penoy

He might doubt the source of the contents of this article but it sure does look logical.

  • penoy

Now how would you run a toxicology test on children like them? If you try to extract them from the area, a gang of gangsters (no pun intended) will really hunt you down.

  • Brian

It’s not like they listed her name or something. The article isn’t about “this particular woman,” it’s an article about “this is the kind of thing that happens in the world, and if you see babies in the hands of beggars that never cry, here’s an explanation/indication of how that can happen.”

    It’s some evidence.

I’ve seen hoards of kids with broken twisted mangled legs dragging themselves across the sidewalk by one good arm pushing a can with a tiny bit of money. They didn’t ALL suddenly break their legs and end up begging for spare change on the same corner. They were put there. This kind of thing happens.

  • chapita

Are you normal?. Because you read an article without any seriuos source you just become sensitive?.

    My God…

  • maam2u

i am curious if the word Romanian is being misused instead of Roma. Romanians are natives of Romania, but Roma is another name for Gypsies. Many of them are notorious for having serious scams going which are highly developed and organized systems. They sometimes use kids in these scams. they are present in many western nations as an ethnic group that usually keeps to their own kind, with very different standards of behavior and customs, some of which are regarded as unethical, criminal or abusive in their host countries.

  • maam2u

the person he consulted is likely a member of the same large ethnic group, which is familiar with the modus operendi of these scammers as they conduct the activities on a large scale. they use the same scams for many generations. I think he’s Roma/ Romani (gypsy), NOT Romanian, and if so then they are familar with this and keep on doing the same scams so yes he would know how it works.

  • maam2u

the woman was never named, but we are now alerted to question what’s going on in case we see a child who never is awake, yet always on display. a drugged child whose life may be in danger. better safe than sorry, and if it saves a few childrens’ lives, then good. WHY would you be more concerned to cover it up rather than to expose what goes on and help people to end this horrible harmful practice??????
This is about ALL of them who are doing it, not just one!

  • Djupast

The woman was never named, but they posted a picture of her.

  • Uzzur

You’ve got to be kidding me dude! Who gives a shit of this anonymous woman is falsely accused or not? The fact is that this practice is real and if exposing the truth about it can save ONE child’s life, it is totally worth it and more important than your petty sentiments. Unless, of course, you know this unnamed woman specifically. I thought not

  • Djupast

Why not just write an article about the horrible situation in general instead of writing about a person who is yelling at a random beggar? It is distasteful.

  • Iris Canal

You don’t know anything about the so called “scheme” either so why defend the woman? Even though this article might not be factual, you also have no right to take sides or be biased. For all I know you could be one of the gang leaders who controls beggars and this article exposes your business too clearly. Why do I assume this? You seem to be WAY too passionate about defending the woman who – if your actually read and paid attention to the article – often is NOT the mother but instead POSES as such. Yes I agree with you that no mother in her right mind would drug or intoxicate her precious child with vodka, because a real mother is supposed to love her child unconditionally and be devoted to protecting her angel. I am a mother and I am certain that these beggars are not mothers or fathers. Even though you don’t wanna acknowledge it, the article provides a good point here: “Do any of you, dear readers, have children? Remember how often they slept at the age of 1, 2 or 3 years old? An hour, two, maximum three (and never consecutive). An afternoon nap, and there was always movement.” If you are not a parent you have no right giving your opinion on this article because you don’t have the privilege of having the point of view as a parent. And if you are, then it’s very sad that you would focus on the beggar’s sacrifice compared to the child’s… This article makes sense, if you don’t see it then I am sorry for you… And now that I’ve scrolled down on the comments section in this article you certainly have a lot to say about defending the woman… interesting…

I’ve seen this in Europe more times than I care to remember and it is heartbreaking. Once in Cádiz, a woman who looked like everyone’s grandma was going around begging from restaurant to restaurant. It felt horrible not to give her money, so I gave her .50 euros. I mean, who would refuse to give money to someone who could be your grandmother? One day I watched her though after she finished making her rounds. She walked over to the shadows and gave the money to her husband. He went directly into the bar and got a couple of beers. Another time, also in Cádiz, there was a horribly disfigured man also begging for money. People walked by and looked at his mangled legs and threw euros into his basket out of pity. He would refuse food or water. I tried to give him water. Two weeks later, I saw him in Sevilla. A month later, he was in Barcelona. He didn’t get there on his own, at least not through the normal transportation systems. Finally, on the Rodalies trains between Barcelona and Sitges, there are always young Roma women, under the watchful eye of older Roma women, passing out little notes staying that they need money to buy formula/milk/food for their always sleeping children. The children are like dolls and they never move. The girls, though, move from car to car with an efficiency that only years of practice would give them. It is a criminal enterprise just as the article suggests. Unfortunately, there is only anecdotal evidence, as the article suggests.

  • Jenna

If you re read what Djupast says, he is discrediting the article based on “no evidence”. The person that wrote this is pulling an article from an unknown source and touting it as truth. What he’s explaining is since this person was not directly involved, nor has no factual evidence from a clear source then that makes this article bogus. Just because you read something on the internet doesn’t make it true. This is the point he is making, which doesn’t make him part of the scheme or mean he is taking the side of the “Mother”. People get hurt from gossip and false information.

  • Lindsey Tallent

What’s your theory as to why they are always sleeping? There must be a reason. Maybe a different drug? Maybe they aren’t alive? Would any of that make it better?

  • Lindsey Tallent

Why do you think he was yelling? It didn’t say that. Also, he wrote about a specific woman (who is not named or identified in any way) in order to illustrate a larger problem.

  • Jesse Shadrack

you are the non sensible person i have met in my life, the piece is so educative

  • Jesse Shadrack

i have once read of such a situation in the Novel written by James Patterson -PRIVATE INDIA,meaning that it is true and it does exist-the gang.

  • Zacharia Karanja

the author was driving point home.He/she just giving caution. She never said the child was under vodka..change of the child and disappearance once the police are called creates suspense

  • Princessa Tina

this is a very inportant article to me and not none sense. i don’t give money to poor beggers who are physically fit. i know a lady in my home town who has been begging for the past 6yrs with a sleeping baby in hand. i asked so many times why is the baby always sleeping. each year after spending about 3-4 months begging at that same place she goes off for a while and comes back after about 6-7 months again. the fun is the babies don’t go older that one year they always have a part of their body bandaged , head, leg or arm. when does she have the next pregnancy? when does she put to birth and start her business again. but now alot of people don’t fall for her tricks. poor kids.

  • Elle

‘This is an article I came across months ago.’ You copied it here, so you copy-pasted it from somwhere. Where from, where was it publiced before? In what paper or on what website? I would like to verify. Thank you

  • Elle

I would like to know the source too. I almost shared it, becouse I could not read it without pain, without being shocked and angry and sad, of course.
But then, of course, I checked who wrote it. Because, I want to know if something so important is true. I hope NOT! And I want to know whether to give or not to give. AND I dio not understand why someone would stat with: I red it months ago, and not mentioning where.. So easily could tell us where. Unless it was not in an article, but someone spoke anonymously? But better then just be open about it.. Still want to know the source before sharing it with my 2000 Facebook-liasons. Have a lovely evening and try to stay ubderstanding instead of judging. Djupast meant well I think. Like you. Like me.

  • Elle

Caring about the authenticity IS, for me caring EXTRA about the issue! If it is true, I will share and THE WORLD needs to KNOW and STOP it from happening ASAP! But before sharing this, I should know. And if it is an anonimous source, it is better just to say so. This could prevent us from asking these questions, or help us to start asking different questions. But with EVERY (news)aricle or every text online you , we, should ALWAYS check the source. This is crusial to helping eachother and not spreading false information or rumours. Asking is showing respect. Means that we care as much as you, each in our own way.

  • Elle

    🙁

  • Elle

    What do you mean?

  • Elle

Can you maybe remember where you read this please?

  • Elle

Thank you Jenna, these are the words I was loking for.

  • Elle

Yes, It is good to be attentive now, to see what is going on with the child of every beggar whe see. But I still would think betteralways mention the source. (He says he READ it SOMEWHERE). Just to avoid us wasting our energy to try track the source down in stead of saving our energy to stop these things , in case they are true.

  • Elle

    What did you discover?

  • Elle

    🙁

  • Equanimity

i’m very grateful for this article. I remember visiting India years ago, and I remember the beggar women with children. Our guide told us it was a scam from the beginning (which wasn’t too hard to imagine, as the beggar women were not poorly dressed, and many even had jewelry). It never occurred to me that the babies were always sleeping. Somehow I missed it. when you just see people for a short moment, I guess you think the babies are just sleeping at that moment.

There is no quick and easy solution to poverty, and as long as it exists, there will always be desperate schemes to survive. I think another option that the article doesn’t explore is to only give money to women begging without children. Sure it’s still buying into the scam, but if the schemers realize the only way to make money is to not use children for begging, it at least gets the children out of the equation while a permanent solution to the problem is found.

  • Equanimity

the article doesn’t name anyone specifically.

When I visited India years ago, our group was told by our guide on the first day about begging scams and how women borrowed children to use for begging. Nothing was mentioned about vodka or heroine, but it is true, the children were always sleeping.

  • Equanimity

It wasn’t her child. She isn’t named specifically and there’s no way to identify her from the article.

  • Anisa E

I live in LA and I saw the same thing on the metro Redline and well and always wondered why the children were always sleeping?! Now I know why!!!!! Absolutely disgusting!

  • Amol Mishra

I heard this fact sometime back from one of my friend. This article made it clear that yes the child is fed with some unconscious making drugs. It’s very disappointing to see people promote such acts by donating money to such women thinking they are doing a generous act. It is us who should be blamed!

  • iarina

dude, as an eastern european im telling you. what he is saying is real and it is happening, you might live in the west where these sceneries are hard to come by and thus you dont believe it but often the saddest option is also the one most likely in this region.
