The whole point of a spiritual practice is to become a happier person. It all starts with contentment. Contentment is hard to come by when we live in a society of consumer capitalism. Growing up, our society teaches us to want more and need more. We are raised with this idea that more stuff equals more happiness, which couldn’t be further from the truth. If we want to learn to be happier people we need to take the first step towards it, and learn to simply be content. Stop looking for happiness in new things, new relationships, or new experiences.
The best way to work towards this is to practice gratitude. Every morning remember all of the incredible things you have to be thankful for. If you are reading this post you are in the top 30% of the world population that has access to the internet, and most likely have a roof over your head, and food on the table. So, stop wanting more, contentment is a stepping stone for happiness. If you want to be a rebel and fight big business this is the best thing you can do. Change the world, be a rebel, and want less!
The following video is a wonderful teaching on contentment from one of my heart Lamas, Lama Sumati Marut.
When you learn to be happy with what you have, you won’t need to have anything to be happy…
