Harvard Business School’s Reza Satchu Explains the Role of Mentorship in Shaping Future Entrepreneurs

Reza Satchu is a name many people in the business world are already well-acquainted with. Aside from being the Founder and Managing Partner of Alignvest Management Corporation, a highly profitable investment firm based out of Toronto, he is also a Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School, where he teaches a top-rated course called ‘The Founder Mindset.’ For more than two decades, Reza Satchu has been a respected authority on entrepreneurship, and his advice has helped shape many of the next generation of business leaders. Sitting down with Satchu at his Harvard office, he immediately launches into the importance of mentorship and its crucial role in influencing the success of young business students and would-be entrepreneurs.

“Mentorship is more than just giving advice,” says Satchu, clearly passionate about the topic. “It’s about guiding and supporting individuals as they navigate their paths.” He says that a mentor’s role is to offer both wisdom and encouragement, helping mentees tackle the many obstacles presented by the competitive and often unpredictable arena of international business.

His commitment to mentorship is evident through his work with NEXT Canada, an organization he founded in 2010 to support Canada’s top young entrepreneurs. NEXT Canada provides resources, funding, and crucial mentorship to help these young minds turn their business ideas into reality. “At NEXT Canada, we focus on more than just business plans; we focus on developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed. It’s inspiring to watch these entrepreneurs grow with our support,” he says.

As the interview progresses, he explains that one of his career highlights is how he has integrated his personal values into his professional work. Reza Satchu’s wife and family play a significant role in his life, offering the support and balance needed to juggle his many responsibilities. “Having the backing of my family is invaluable,” Satchu explains. “Their support allows me to dedicate time and energy to Alignvest, NEXT Canada, my work as a professor here at Harvard, and my mentoring duties, all the while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.”

The influence of mentorship in Reza Satchu’s work is clear from the success stories. Take Aileen Agada, for example. Aileen Agada, a young entrepreneur in the NEXT Canada program, was able to transform her ideas into a thriving business, thanks in part to the guidance and resources provided by Satchu and his team. “Aileen’s journey is a testament to the power of effective mentorship,” says Satchu. “Her drive and the support she received helped her achieve remarkable success.” These success stories serve as a beacon of hope for all aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating the potential of effective mentorship to turn dreams into reality.

As a Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School, Reza Satchu continues to impact the entrepreneurial world. His courses focus on developing the mindset and skills necessary for startup success. “Teaching at Harvard gives me the chance to shape future leaders,” he says. “Each day I teach a class, I do my best to equip my students with the tools they need to face business challenges head-on and achieve the goals they’ve set for themselves. Considering this university’s reputation, it should come as no surprise that some of my students are quite ambitious, and some of their goals are quite far-reaching.”

Satchu’s approach to mentorship extends beyond traditional methods. He believes in fostering a long-term supportive environment where young entrepreneurs feel empowered to take risks and learn from their experiences. “It’s about creating a relationship that enables young entrepreneurs to thrive. When they know they have someone to turn to for solid counsel and unconditional support, they’re more likely to push boundaries and achieve great things.” This emphasis on support and empowerment is encouraging for all entrepreneurs, instilling a sense of confidence in their ability to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

“The concept of mentorship isn’t just about guiding people through their professional journey—it’s about inspiring them to reach their full potential. There are three or four parts of my life in which I take great pride: the health and happiness of my wife and family, the growth of my businesses, the successful careers of my students, and the positive impact that they hopefully will have.”

That pride, it seems, is well-founded.
