Overcoming the Hurdles in Life – Learning from Ghanim Al Muftah

Adversity is a part of life that people cannot escape. It is something that occurs without any discrimination. Whether rich or poor or man or woman, anyone can fall victim to adversities. However, the way one deals with it is what determines the severity of its effects. Some people have to deal with deteriorating health, while some people have to deal with poverty. Everyone in this world is dealing with a unique set of problems.

There are several personalities that have set examples of showing resilience, patience, and optimism while dealing with life-altering situations. Out of the many examples, there is one individual who is taking the world by storm by displaying high levels of patience and optimism. Popularly known as the miracle of the Gulf, Ghanim Al-Muftah, is a living and breathing example. Despite suffering from a severe physical disability, he has managed to become an epitome of resilience. He is showing the world that no adversity in life is significant enough to force a person to give up or lose hope.

Ghanim Al-Muftah, the Winner, is a 17-year old social media icon who was born and raised in Qatar. He was born on 5th May 2002, with Caudal Regression Syndrome, a rare and complex disorder. It is a very rarely occurring disorder that affects 1 to 3 per 100,000 newborns. It hinders the development and growth of the lower half of the body, including the lower back, limbs, gastrointestinal tract, and even the genitourinary tract.

The GoodWill Ambassador star did not let his disability come in the way and stop him from fulfilling his dreams, pursuing his passion, or achieving his goals. With high endurance levels and the passion for living his life to the fullest, Ghanim has become the focal point of the world by showing the people the right way to overcome the hurdles in life.

A Young Social-Media Star

Ghanim Al-Muftah was born without the lower half of the body. Instead of giving up, he stood out to become a living example of patience.  The young man from Qatar did not let his physical disability affect his mental abilities or intelligence. His life is full of situations where he has displayed the highest levels of courage.

He is a social media sensation, and he believes that social media is the window to the world. It is a medium through which people can easily spread their message and even instill awareness among people. Ghanim Al-Muftah influences millions of people through his social media presence.

Role of Family, Friends, and the Nation in Improving his Life

According to the 17-year-old Ghanim, the biggest challenge of his life is the constant medical therapy he has to go through. It tires him beyond human comprehension. He has to undergo extensive surgical care every year in Europe, and it creates a very difficult situation for him.

Ghanim’s parents are playing a significant role in keeping his spirits high and encourage him to remain steadfast even during a tough phase of life. The young man inherited qualities such as patience and endurance from his mother, who helped him turn into an optimistic individual. His twin brother, Ahmad, has served as his backbone throughout his life. Ghanim has more than 8 books, all written by his mother. She distributed the books for free to make the community accept Ghanims’ disability. Besides his parents, his sister, and twin brother, the entire nation plays a pivotal role in encouraging him to grab opportunities that help him build a stable life for himself.

In June 2015, Ghanim Al-Muftah was brought in as the brand ambassador of Qatar Financial Centre Authority – QFC. At the time of this announcement, the Chief Executive Officer of QFC stated, “Ghanim is an accomplished young Qatari and an inspiration to many. His diverse contributions to our community and his perseverance in the face of difficulties are further proof of his determination to succeed. The idea behind this partnership is to underline the QFC’s philosophy that great success comes from great support.”

The Qatari-based non-profit organization, Reach Out to Asia – ROTA, announced the “Empowering Palestinian Refugee Children and Youth through Sports in Lebanon” program in 2015. The aim of this program was to restore sports facilities in three Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. The three camps in focus were El-Bus, Mieh Mieh, and Nahr el-Bared camps. ROTA brought in Ghanim as its goodwill ambassador. He paid visits to all three Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon in the same year. The Qatari-inspiration led a campaign to gather funds for the program. His efforts gave out amazing results, and by the year 2018, the program had gathered more than a million Qatari Rial. In Rota Gala Dinner, his hat was raffled and it reached around 350.000$. The money went to the Syrian refugee for their education.

Father Emir of Qatar, Shk. Hamad Bin Khalifa, Emir of Qatar, Shk. Tamim Bin Hamadand  Prime Minister Of Dubai, Shk. Mohmmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum are few influential individuals that have recognized Ghanim’s humanitarian and social efforts.

Active-Participant in Sports

Ghanim Al-Muftah actively participates in sports. He loves skateboarding, swimming, ice-hockey, scuba-diving, and football. He has even dived to 20 meters in the sea. He has always been so fond of sports that he used to play football in school with “normal” kids while wearing gloves in his hands. His love for physical activities even encouraged him to climb Jebel Shams, the highest mountain of the Hajar range. Moreover, Ghanim has expressed his desire to climb Mount Everest.

When the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championship was set to take place in Doha in 2015, Ghanim Al-Muftah featured in the final film of the “My Incredible Story” series. In the film, he expresses that he hopes to become a part of Paralympics one day. In addition to this, he stated, “I want people to understand that people with disabilities are capable of giving and are active in society.” He wishes to join the Paralympics’ championship for archery or swimming. The CEO of the organizing committee of the IPC Championship, Ameer Al-Mulla, stated, “Ghanim is an incredible young boy, and he is the embodiment of hope, determination, and giving. He is just 13 years old, yet he is already changing perceptions of disability in our country. He has achieved a huge amount in his young years and he is a fantastic role model for young Qataris.”

Ghanim Al-Muftah as Qatar’s Youngest Entrepreneur

Ghanim Al-Muftah is just 17 years old, and he has established himself as Qatar’s youngest entrepreneur. He is the founder of Gharissa Ice Cream, which has six branches that collectively employ 60 employees. The young entrepreneur was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year award when he put forward his mission to expand his business to other gulf countries.

Besides running an ice cream business, Ghanim has set up the Association of Ghanim, with the assistance of his family. The goal of his association is to donate wheelchairs to the people in need. Ghanim’s work as an entrepreneur is inspiring young people to develop entrepreneurial skills.

Ghanim is a motivational speaker who aims to become an ambassador for Qatar by becoming a diplomat. He wishes to pursue an education in international politics. Despite being a victim of a severe disability, Ghanim Al-Muftah was able to establish himself as an inspirational personality for not only Qatar but also for the entire world.
