Top 10 American TV Series by Emmys 2019

Hollywood is not only famous with blockbuster movies but also for TV series such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Prison Break, The Big Bang Theory…  which are widely popular and have a giant fanbase. 1. Game of Thrones

In 2019, Game of Thrones has premiered its final season. This is the most popular TV series at present, and also recognized as one of the two best TV series of all time, together with Breaking Bad.

Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama show, based on a historical fictional background where alliances and conflicts among the noble dynasties fighting for the Iron Throne. All of the viewers had high expectations for the final part of the series, however it has received many negative reviews and critics from their fans. Many believe that the ending does not live up to their expectations.

However, Game of Thrones season 8 has the most nominees at Primetime Emmy Awards, up to 31 nominees. Game of Thrones has won Outstanding Drama Series – the most prestigious title of Emmy, together with 11 more awards. All of that proves regardless of the final season, Game of Thrones still deserves no.1 position in this list.

2. Chernobyl

Along with Game of Thrones, in 2019, Chernobyl is widely mentioned by critics and viewers. Although this is just a limited series, Chernobyl receives outstandingly high rating from all of whom concern.

Chernobyl dramatized the story of the 1986 nuclear accident – one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history – and of the sacrifices made to save Europe from unimaginable disaster.

Although season one is the one and only season (limited series) with 5 episodes, Chernobyl has won Outstanding Limited Series, the 2nd most prestigious award. Moreover, Chernobyl won 10 more Emmys awards in total of 19 nominees.

3. Fleabag

Fleabag may not be as trendy or famous as the 2 above series, but at Primetime Emmy, this is the show that totally dominates all of the Comedy Series. This show’s storyline revolves around one young woman living in London, who struggles with all kinds of things in life: her love life, her dying business, her terrible connections towards her family,… With Fleabag, you will be able to go on a rollercoaster of highs and lows.

At Primetime Emmy Award 2019, Fleabag is the name that got announced twice for winning 2 impressive awards in one night: Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Actress for a Comedy Series. Fleabag also leads at the award for the numbers of main wins with 3 wins. But in total, it still has fewer main awards than Game of Thrones and Chernobyl, hence it finishes at no.3.

4. Ozark

Being nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Ozark is one title that gets numerous attentions for years. This show is all about a financial adviser moving to Missouri Ozarks to complete his job of money laundering for Mexican drug cartels.

At the Emmy, Ozark received 9 nominees, and this show won 2 out of 9, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series – a dream award for any TV series director.

 

5. When They See Us

When They See Us is a documentary produced by Netflix. The show based on a breaking true story in New York 1989. Five teens from Harlem become trapped in a nightmare when they’re falsely accused of a brutal attack at a white woman in Central Park. When They See Us hits on the aching problem of racism which is often used as a plot for many movies and dramas in the US.

When They See Us received 16 nominees at the Primetime Emmy Awards, which made it the 2nd most nominated series at the 71st Emmy. This series is also nominated for Outstanding Limited Series, but it only won 2 awards for acting and casting.

6. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is also one of many names that received huge attention in Comedy Series section. The show has a pretty simple storyline: a housewife trying to achieve her dream of becoming a comedy star. Regardless of that, this TV series has successfully transmit its message – just follow your dream no matter what.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel received 20 nominees at the Primetime Emmy, including 7 main nominees. The show won 8 awards for acting and casting.

 

7. Better Call Saul

Being a spin-off of the best series of all time: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, sadly cannot obtain such success as Breaking Bad’s but it is classified as a series that worth binge-watching to any fans. The show focuses on Jimmy the lawyer – who later changed his name into Saul and becomes a laundering money lawyer for Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Besides, Better Call Saul is considered as a prequel for Breaking Bad when it reveals the relationship between Mike and Gus Fring along with the Salamanca’s cartel.

This is the 4th time Better Call Saul gets nominated at the Primetime Emmy and 2nd it’s got nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Although the series did not win any awards, it’s still remained its popularity and made it to the list.

 

8. Russian Doll

Russian Doll is a quite hit action comedy series from Netflix. The name “Russian Doll” got inspired from real Russian dolls that keeps stacking inside one another. The series follows by the lead of Nadia Vulvokov – who has to experience time loop: she keeps dying and relivings her 36th birthday party.

At the Emmy Awards 2019, Russian Doll got nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, which proves Netflix’s success when this streaming service received nominations for all 3 most prestigious awards. Russian Doll also got another 12 nominations, however it won only 3 small awards.

9. The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is a fiction show that sets in a dystopian future, when a woman is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship.

At the Emmys, The Handmaid’s Tale was nominated 14 times, including an unexpected nominee for Outstanding Directing for Drama Series. The show also won 3 Emmys but they are not big ones.

10. True Detective

It was once a hit series, nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and won Outstanding Directing for Drama Series for season 1, the season 2 of True Detective was poorly executed. Not until season 3 was True Detective able to regain its stable performance with the appearance of Oscar Mahershala Ali.

However, at the Emmys, True Detective just got 9 nominations, 2 of those are main nominees for acting. Unfortunately, the show could not bring any of those awards home. Nonetheless, the season 3 of True Detective still obtains many positive feedbacks and nominations at many awards, hence it makes sense when the show takes no.10 place in this list.
