About The Mexico Tourist Card
The Mexico Tourist card is an official travel document that foreign citizens must obtain if they want to visit Mexico.
Although the Tourist Card can be obtained upon arrival, getting it online is a far better option for three reasons:
- Even if there’s a minor error in your documents that hinders your verification; the Mexican authorities might not grant you a Tourist Card and you’ll be deported back to your home country.
- There are only negligible extra charges in getting the Mexico Tourist Card online, as compared to getting it on arrival.
- By choosing to apply for the Tourist Card online, you’d not have to waste almost half your day standing and waiting in lengthy queues to obtain the same.
You should note that the Mexico Tourist Card is not a replacement for the Mexican tourist visa.
Citizens of certain countries can enter Mexico without a tourist visa, while citizens from other countries would require a visa — each and every visitor, however, must compulsorily have the Mexico Tourist Card.
The list of all the countries whose citizens can enter Mexico with only a Mexico Tourist Card is provided at the end of this article.[*]

And that is it! After these 3 straightforward steps, you’d have your Mexico Tourist Card!
The validity of the Mexico Tourist Card
The Mexico Tourist Card for both: arrival by air, and arrival by land; has a validity of 6 months.
This means that your Tourist Card will expire in 180 days, and you’d have to re-issue it in case you want to visit Mexico again.
Regarding your entry and stay; your Mexico Tourist Card will allow you to enter the country strictly once, and that too for a period not exceeding 180 days.
In other words, if you visit Mexico once and stay there for 20 days; you’d have to re-issue your Mexico Tourist Card to enter Mexico again, even though the current one hasn’t expired.
If You Misplace Your Mexico Tourist Card
According to the Mexican National Institute of Immigration (INM) — the prominent Mexican agency which issues the Mexico Tourist Cards; the first step you need to take if you misplace your tourist card is to file a police report to officially register its loss.
After that, immediately go to the nearest INM office with the police report, your passport, travel documents, and other identification papers.
The INM will then ask you to fill out a form, and instruct you to visit a bank so as to pay for the replacement of your Tourist Card.
Having made your payment at the bank, return to the INM office and show them the proof of payment. They’ll grant you a replaced Mexico Tourist Card.
However, if you find yourself simply not having enough time to go through the entire Tourist Card replacement process, you can unfussily leave it be.
Just wait until you’re leaving Mexico and pay a penalty of $40 USD for not being able to show the Tourist Card to the verifying authorities.
Covid-19 Travel Restrictions
As of January 2021, Mexico has seen a total of about 1.7 million COVID-19 cases.
Averaging at about 15,000 new cases each day, it is one of the hardest corona-hit countries, and therefore, a compulsory 14-day quarantine on arrival for everyone visiting Mexico was set up.
But, thanks to the efficient actions taken by the Mexican officials in their fight against COVID-19, the 14-day mandatory quarantine on arrival requirement is no longer in place.
Moreover, Mexico is now completely open to tourists. There is no need to even provide a negative PCR test upon your entry in Mexico as well.
The only thing the travelers visiting Mexico must do on arrival is to fill out a health declaration form and scan an included QR code alongside. There are no more COVID related formalities to undergo unless explicitly stated by the Mexican authorities.
